The Lake District has been enjoying some unusually hot weather lately, and it looks set to continue for the foreseeable future. Sometimes when it’s this warm, a walk on the fells can be sapping on your energy levels. Luckily, one of the magic things about the Lakes is the sheer variety of things to see and do. Here are 10 cool ideas for those days when it’s baking hot, that you can easily do from our luxury riverside apartment at Kendal Holiday Cottages.
1. Go wild swimming
Wild swimming has enjoyed a surge in interest in the last 10 years, and where better to try it than in the Lake District? It’s enjoyed all year round in the Lakes, but is perhaps most refreshing in the Summer months. Plunging into cold, crystal-clear lake water can be a little bracing at first but there’s said to be lots of associated health benefits.
A popular spot to dip your toes is at Millerground on the shores of Windermere, just a 15-minute drive from Kendal. The site consists of an accessible gravel beach with shallow entry points and, best of all, fabulous views of the Langdale Pikes.
2. Take a boat trip
If wild swimming doesn’t appeal, but you like the idea of being at one with nature, then why not enjoy the Lakes from a boat trip? Each of the lakes has very different boat trips available to the public – cruises on Windermere (Windermere Lake Cruises), traditional wooden launches on Coniston (Coniston Launch) or steam yacht gondolas on Ullswater (Ullswater Steamers).
