You can’t really skip Angkor Wat, and honestly, you shouldn’t want to. It’s the largest religious monument on the planet, set against jungle that presses right up against the stonework, and the sunrise over those towers is one of those things photographs never quite manage to capture. Ta Prohm, nearby, is the one where the tree roots have essentially taken the ruins over — half-swallowed, still standing. Worth the early wake-up call.
