You land at Punta Cana and walk into an open-air terminal under thatched palm roofs. The warm, humid air reaches you before you reach the bottom of the stairs. At Santo Domingo, the airport feels like a city’s: Dominican families carrying bags of presents, business travelers, shorter lines. At La Romana, you’re through a tiny terminal and on the road in minutes. Same country, three completely different first hours.

The Dominican Republic has eight international airports and a mountain range down the middle, so the airport that looks closest (or the cheapest flight) can leave you hours from your hotel. The right airport depends on where you’re sleeping. I’m Danilo Guzmán. I run Transekur, a private transfer company in the Dominican Republic, and our drivers meet flights at every airport in this article. Here’s how I’d match airport to region.

A Driver Waiting When You Land

Transekur, the author’s transfer company, has run private airport transfers in the Dominican Republic since 2012. Your chauffeur follows your flight, waits at the confirmed meeting point with your name on a tablet and drives your party straight to your own hotel entrance, with no stops at other resorts.
