Most Filipinos in Australia save their annual leave for one trip, usually in December. Three weeks home, a long list of relatives, and by the time you land back in Sydney or Melbourne, the leave balance is empty and long weekends are all you have left for the rest of the year.

The three days never feel like enough to plan a proper trip around, so most of those weekends get spent at home. The Whitsundays answer that better than almost anywhere else in the country. A group of 74 islands off the north Queensland coast, with water clear enough to see coral from the surface. No passport or visa complications. You book a flight, a room and one boat trip, and the planning is finished.

Three days also happens to be the right length for a Whitsundays tour. Fly out Friday morning, spend Saturday on the Great Barrier Reef, and you are home by Sunday evening with a holiday behind you and your annual leave still sitting there untouched.

Why The Whitsundays Work

Because Hamilton Island holds the whole trip. Three days is a tight window, and none of it goes on transfers, because nothing here is further than a short walk or a free shuttle.

There is nothing foreign to manage either. No currency to exchange, and your phone plan and Medicare card still work. A three-day Whitsundays holiday does not feel like a rushed version of a real one. And the best part? You only have to do minimal planning.

When To Go

Any long weekend…
